Login as a root from GUI for Ubuntu 8.10

Enable root Login from GUI for Ubuntu 8.10

Hi Friends,I am sharing method to login as a root from GUI in Ubuntu 8.10.
Its not at all good to login as root from gui but if some one wants to know that how to login as a root from GUI then follow below instructions.

1.Login as a user from GUI.

2.Now Click on System -> Click on Administration -> Click on Users and Groups.

3.Now you will see screen of users and groups. You will see the root user is locked.
so Click on UNLOCK button it will ask you password of your user.Enter password and click on OK.

4.You will able to see now user root is now unlocked,
Double-Click on root and set your root password. Then Click OK. Close the Users and Groups window now.

5.Open your terminal from Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal.

6.Login as a root from terminal by executing su – root command enter password and login from root.

7.Make a back-up of your /etc/gdm/gdm.conf file by executing this command
cp /etc/gdm/gdm.conf cp /etc/gdm/gdm.conf

8.Open your /etc/gdm/gdm.conf file in your favorite browser
vim /etc/gdm/gdm.conf

9.Search for AllowRoot=false and Replace it with AllowRoot=true.(remember this is case sensitive).

10.Now Log out from current user and Login as a root with password which you set earlier.

    You are FOOL not Others……….because you did not read post carefully…….

    If you did not read this post correctly then just check numbers of your eyes and read it again i clearly mentioned that login as root is not at all good but then also if someone likes to login then this post for them. OK GOT IT?
    I hope you learn a good lession from VGLUG about this root topic i dont have to say anymore……

  • My eye numbers are correct. Get your fact. Drugs is dangerous for health and society and if you promote it with warning, it doesn’t means at all.

    You dont have any standards to comment on VGLUG. All VGLUG members kicked you out from that group got it? and still i think your numbers are not correct because i clearly mentioned that this post is for them who likes to login as root from GUI. Remember one thing that if you are not login as a root from GUI that doesnt mean that No one is log in as a root from GUI got it? and i Know you will not get it because still you cant accept that VGLUG threw you out from that group right ???????
    Accept it man now you are completely out………From that group…..

    Since i noticed, the problem is: To be or not to be a ROOT. Big deal, but if you want to run on the edge, i think that you know what you’re doing, so, go deep on this ocean of information and migrate to other ‘nix distribution. Yeah, the Ubuntu is the only that locks the root login in a GUI. There are workarounds, but, if your hardware is not a dilema, try others Debian distros. Like: Samba/nfs servers – must be SUSE; Firewall/Apache (hunting-warriors) please FREE-BSD, and so on…

    dude… this is good info. Linux is about “do as you choose” and help others. you did you part, and I do like to logon as root time to time.

    It is very help full. but Can you help me on following problem. My Problem is that I am not able to create directory in /usr from GUI. I am use sudo make avin to create directory from command prompt. I am admin user which I created at the time of installation. Plz help.

    Hello Avin,

    You are executing wrong command. To create directory you need to execute “sudo mkdir avin”. Hope it works for you. let me know with errors if you are not able to create directory.
